Mario Kart 7 gets its first update in over a decade
Update [Tue 20th Dec, 2022 03:45 GMT]: Information Miner Oatmeal clarified last week mario kart 7 update. Looks like changes have been made to the game’s networking code and there has also been an update to stop using Version 1.1 with Version 1.2.
3DS homebrew developer and moderator Mario Kart 7 PabloMK7 go into more detailed analysis (via Twitter):
I finished calculating the differences in the new Mario Kart 7 v1.2 update, here are all: Out of the more than 20000 functions of the game: – 27 functions have been changed. – 2 new functions have been added. – A minor compiler glitch is gone.
Most of the changes and added functionality are related to the network code, specifically the handling of the communication protocol between players. None of the changes add new functionality or gameplay (I can’t give more details, you’ll have to wait).
Some changes are related to the parameters sent to the server so that players running v1.1 do not pair players running v1.2 during the time the update is released, as logged in players will not be started. forced to update until they re-enter online mode.
One final change involves increasing the version number of the game when the game launches the in-game updater. This number is not used at all to check for updates, just to initiate an update, so unless the game updates again, this change will probably never be used.
Regarding the compiler glitch, there is a “-1” next to a bean-related function that is unused and deleted. The fact that “-1” is implicitly present in the code is likely a compiler glitch, and both its addition and removal is most likely unintentional.
