Majority of employees prefer hybrid work, 25% want to work remotely: Survey

After nearly two years of telecommuting amid the ongoing pandemic, companies appear to be planning to reopen offices more widely and bring their employees back to the office. However, a report by NASSCOM and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that only 5% of tech workers are willing to return to the workplace full-time.

The report, titled ‘Shaping the Future of Jobs in India’s Tech Industry’, includes a stakeholder survey of 75 public companies.

More than 80% of IT companies and GCC are more likely to adopt combined work compared to the rest of the industry segments, the survey said.

Given the choice, nearly 70% of employees in digital fields would prefer a combination of remote and on-premises models, while 25% would choose to work completely remotely. Up to 70% of technology service buyers say they are comfortable with hybrid models.

Hybrid work is a flexible approach that allows employees to split their time between working in the office and working from home. Combined work varies in flexibility.

The survey also found that employees miss out on social and informal interactions, formal face-to-face meetings, and better work settings.

Newer work models may include the adoption of higher on-demand pay models involving contract workers and freelancers, NASSCOM said.

Companies are also planning to shift geographic location and shift focus to Tier 2 or Tier 3 towns. This approach aims to attract and retain highly skilled talent spread across regions. geographical area.

The study is based on a survey conducted during the third quarter (July to September) of 2021 with approximately 20,000 respondents from around the world. Of these, 500 are from India, said BCG managing director & partner Nitin Chandalia.

Chandalia emphasizes the need for innovative solutions to create a workplace of the future. “The pattern of future work is not binary, and many variations can occur in a continuum,” he said.
