Live update: At least 149 people killed in Halloween incident in Seoul


World leaders have sent condolences and messages of support to South Korea after growing crowds apparently killed at least 149 people in Itaewon District of Seoul during Halloween.

Philip Seth Goldberg, US ambassador to Korea since 2022, tweeted in both English and Korean: “I am devastated by the tragic loss of life in Itaewon last night. Please know my thoughts and those of our team at the US Embassy in Seoul, are with the Korean people and especially the loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as many others. injured in this tragic incident. ”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: “All our thoughts are with those who are currently responding and all Koreans at this very sad time.”

“France is with you,” said President Emmanuel Macron, tweeting in French and Korean.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tweeted: “The tragic events in Seoul came as a shock to all of us. Our thoughts are with the many victims and their families. This is a sad day for Korea. Germany is always on their side.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “On behalf of the people of Canada, I extend my deepest condolences to the people of Korea today, following the deadly stampede in Seoul. My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy, and I wish the injured a speedy and complete recovery. ”

The Australian government also sent a message of support.

The Australian Embassy in Seoul said it was “urgently investigating” with local authorities to determine if any Australians were involved.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said: “Extremely saddened by the terrible events in central Seoul. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a tragedy with lots of young casualties. We are with the people of the Republic of Korea during this difficult time.”
