Let Schools Explain the Engineering to You on GR Corolla’s Amazing New AWD System

Toyota GR Corolla’s brilliant AWD system – Torque split!

I don’t know if you’ve been watching the Internet lately, but 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is causing an uproar. With all-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a 300-horsepower three-cylinder engine, how could it not be? But those headline numbers only tell part of the story.

There’s a lot of cool tech behind the scenes that make it so hot, and luckily for us, Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained is around to help disrupt some of that technology. This time, he tells us how the GR Corolla’s all-new (and very cool) all-wheel drive system works. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty complicated.

So, tl; dr is this: The GR Corolla uses an active clutch package on the rear axle’s input shaft to manage torque misalignment between the front and rear wheels. This clutch pack acts as a brake on the front axle, and the more braking force the clutch pack exerts, the more torque the rear axle sees. Follow up so far?

So this brake force method works because the rear axle is shifted slightly lower (0.7%, to be exact) compared to the front bridge. This means that the rear axle is always trying to spin faster than the front axle, which means that for the wheels to spin at the same speed (in a straight line), the clutch on the rear axle has to slip a bit. . That slip gives the car’s computers something to work with when calculating adjustments to torque splits.

The GR Corolla has three basic torque splits from which the driver can choose. The forward bias mode transmits 60% of the torque to the front wheels, 40% to the rear wheels. The track mode does that 50/50, while the rear-bias mode sends 70% of the available torque to the rear axle, allowing you to do silly things. These goals vary based on grip level and road conditions, but it’s understandable.

Seriously, Jason’s explanation is a lot better than mine, and I hope you check it out. Also, he has a very cute cat named Bucket, and Bucket must eatso give Jason the views.
