K’taka-Maha border row: Eknath Shinde appoints 2 ministers to work with legal team

The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka in the 1940s remained unresolved. The case is currently being handled by the Supreme Court of India. However, on Monday, the Eknath Shinde government said it had appointed ministers Chandrakant Patil and Shambhuraj Desai to coordinate with the legal team involved in the case over the border dispute.

CM Eknath Shinde also announced that the freedom fighter pension scheme would include those in areas claimed by Maharashtra but under administrative control of the neighboring country.

He added that his government is very active in expanding the benefits of Mahatma Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana for people living in these areas. Maharashtra, since its founding in 1960, has been embroiled in a dispute with Karnataka over the status of Belgaum district (also known as Belagavi) and 80 other Marathi-speaking villages, which are under the control of the southern state.

Shinde, who appointed Patil and Desai after a meeting regarding the ongoing case, said: “The late Balasaheb Thackeray was always a staunch supporter of the state’s request to make Belgaum part of Maharashtra. . We have focused on resolving the matter. If necessary, the number of lawyers will be increased. We will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amish Shah on this matter.”

CM also requested a delegation of residents of Belagavi and neighboring areas to maintain proper communication with the Government of Karnataka regarding the provision of necessary facilities and the use of Marathi in day-to-day affairs in the disputed areas.

The state government has also appointed senior lawyer Vaidyanathan to represent Maharashtra in the Supreme Court case. While Patil is the minister of higher education and engineering, Desai holds the excise portfolio.
