On Saturday, Kate Middleton, newly crowned Princess of Wales, shared a story of her youngest son’s reaction to the death of her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who passed away on Thursday, May 8. 9. Kate was walking the grounds of Windsor with Prince William leaving tributes to the late Queen’s honorees as she recounted what happened after Prince Louis heard the news.
“My baby Louis is so sweet,” Kate says in the video, finally in tears. “He said, ‘Don’t worry, because you’re staying with great-grandfather now.'”
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and great-grandfather of Prince Louis, passed away in April 2021.
The Prince and Princess of Wales appeared alongside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have been invited at the last minute, and some see it as a sign that reconciliation between the two brothers and their wives is on the cards. This is the first time they have been seen intentionally being friends since the Sussex family resigned as working members of the royal family and moved to California.
That same afternoon, William released a statement on social media about Elizabeth, reflecting on her time as regent, but also her role as grandmother.
“On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader whose commitment to country, Kingdom and Commonwealth is absolute,” he began. “There is much to be said in the coming days about the significance of her historic reign.”
“However, I have lost a grandmother. And while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have benefited from the Queen’s wisdom and assurance in my fifth decade. My wife has had twenty years of guiding and supporting her. My three kids have had to spend vacations with her and create memories that will last for the rest of their lives.
“She was by my side in my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life. I know this day will come, but it will be a while before the reality of life without Grannie really feels real.”
He concluded, “My grandmother famously said that grief is the price we pay for love. All the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we have for our extraordinary Queen. I will honor her memory by supporting my father, the King, in any way I can. “
