Via Sam Volz: Former WBO heavyweight champion Johnny Nelson poured fuel on the fire today saying he would have beaten unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk if the two fought his day in the 1990s to come. 2005.

Nelson has created a lot of buzz with his recent comments about Usyk (19-0.13 KOs) being an “average male hitter.”

He bases his opinion on that belief that Usyk is not on the same level as the likes of Pernell Whitaker, Prince Naseem Hamed and Manny Pacquiao.

Of course, those fighters never competed in the higher weight classes, so it’s not fair for Nelson to compare a bigger boxer to them.

You could argue that Nelson (45-12-2, 29 KOs) fought for a week in the cruiser class.

During the six-year period that Nelson held the WBO belt, he battled with lackluster opposition, mainly from Europe. As a result, Nelson was able to hold his WBO cruiser belt a lot longer than when he was fighting in this era or when Usyk was running in that weight class.

“Usyk is an outstanding fighter. As a male singer, he’s not Pernell Whitaker,” Johnny Nelson told Against TV Hub. “He is not Prince Naseem Hamed, nor is he Manny Pacquiao, but he is a very good fighter.

“So when you’re talking as a Southpaw, the last Southpaws are the ones you avoid like the plague because you can’t touch them. That’s the difference. I’m not saying these guys aren’t good fighters.

“As a Southpaw, I wouldn’t say this guy is an unbelievable nampaw. Nelson says as a southern terrier, there are more skills.

Once again, Nelson is comparing Usyk to fighters who are much smaller than him and will obviously have more speed. If those fighters were upgraded to cruiser class, their speed would have a big effect.

“You ask if I beat Usyk? In my day, yes, I will do. When I was the cruiser class champion, I believed I was the best champion in the world.

“I didn’t say I would go in there with Usyk. I’m old enough to be his dad,” said Nelson.
