Jimmy Kimmel is now fully awake and has addressed his 2022 Emmys, which some viewers felt was a distraction from Quinta Brunson’s pivotal moment.
In Abbott Elementary School Creators and stars appear on Wednesdays on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the presenter apologized after his segment caused backlash when he failed to leave the stage for her acceptance speech. Kimmel called it a “stupid comedy,” adding, “Actually, I’m sorry I did it. And the last thing I want to do is make you sad because I think about you too much. And I think you know that – I hope you know that. ”
Brunson happily accepted and told him, “You said it so kindly.” She explained that she was so wrapped up in her first Emmy-winning moment that she didn’t mind what else was going on around her. “I had a great night,” said the performer.
Earlier in the episode, she dropped by the end of Kimmel’s monologue, Emmy in hand, to see if she could thank some people she didn’t have time to mention at Thursday’s ceremony. Two or not. “You know, when you win an Emmy, you only have 45 seconds to give an acceptance speech, isn’t that much time?” she asked Kimmel. “And then you have less time because someone plays a silly comedy that goes on a bit long.”
Before the episode, the official Twitter account of the late night show ABC posted image of Brunson holding the Emmy Award from Kimmel’s stage.
“Let’s see who interrupted Jimmy’s monologue tonight!” Read the tweet’s message.
On Monday’s Emmy Awards telecast that aired on NBC, Will Arnett and Kimmel were presenters for best written work in a comedy series. Arnett dragged the seemingly unconscious Kimmel onto the stage, explaining that the host hit the margarita too hard after losing his category.
Brunson won an Emmy for writing, and Kimmel was on stage during her speech; she had to step past him to get to the microphone and even tell him to wake up. For her part, she’s a bit of a sports person throughout and added his name to her list of thanks at the end of her speech. However, some social media users have posted that Kimmel should have stood up for his speech.
Later, Brunson told reporters backstage that Kimmel’s part “didn’t bother me that much,” with the actress pointing out that he was supportive of her show early on. However, she added that she was scheduled to guest on his show on Wednesday and joked that she “could punch him in the face.”
During ABC’s TCA presentation on Wednesday, Abbott Elementary School Co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph said she felt it was disrespectful that Kimmel remained on stage during the speech. “I don’t know what is going on. I was like, ‘I wish he just got off the ground,’ said Ralph, who won an Emmy in 2022. “Then I realized it was Jimmy, and I said, ‘Oh, disrespect.’ I love Jimmy Kimmel, but I’m sorry. I told him to his face, and he understood.”
