India’s PC shipments fall below 5 million for the first time in four quarters: report

NEW DELHI : India’s PC shipments grew 12% in the June quarter, although the number of units shipped in the quarter fell below the 5 million mark for the first time in four quarters, shows the market researcher’s latest report. Canalys School, announced Monday. A total of 4.6 million PCs including laptops, desktops and tablets were shipped during the quarter.

With 2.6 million units, laptops account for less than half of PC shipments, however, it only grew at 2% YoY (YoY) due to demand in the consumer segment weakened by the reopening of schools. Tablet shipments also grew by a modest 9% year-on-year to 1.1 million units. Meanwhile, desktop PC shipments spiked at 70% year-on-year, reaching 900,000 units in the quarter, according to the report.

“The sharp decline in the consumer market ended seven consecutive quarters of record expansion,” said Ashweej Aithal, analyst at Canalys.

Aithal said laptops accounted for 61% of the market in the June quarter of last year. However, it has dropped to 48% this year. He added: “Decreased demand for tablets and laptops has contributed to the consumer market slump, with shipments of these two falling by 23% and 11%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the commercial segment grew by 50% year-on-year and now accounts for 52% of the overall PC market. Aithal attributes this to PC vendors expanding local production to qualify for government contracts for PCs.

For example, HP has been expanding laptop production in the country, which has helped it get orders from the public sector. Similarly, Acer has partnered with contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies, and Lenovo is ramping up domestic supplies of tablets and laptops with its third production line, Aithal pointed out.

In terms of market share, HP is the leading personal computer vendor with a 25% market share after 1.1 million units shipped. Analysts attribute HP’s continued dominance to its “strong retail store expansion” across the country.

Lenovo with 21.1% market share and 973,000 units shipped is once again the world’s top supplier. Dell, Acer and Samsung are the remaining three leading brands in the top 5 with market shares of 11.5%, 11.3% and 5.8%, respectively.
