Indian employees pursue dark web to sell inside information for money

According to a report by cybersecurity company Kaspersky, India is among the top 5 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, where employees make money selling their organization’s data on the dark web. According to the report, the country accounts for 35% of all insider cases of dark web sales in the Apac region by 2021. India also accounts for 9.8% of the total data leaks in the Apac region. .

The dark web is a term used for parts of the Internet that are not accessible by regular browsers and require special software such as the Onion Router Browser (TOR). Websites on the dark web cannot be crawled by search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Internally selling corporate data makes it easy for hackers to carry out attacks on companies or install malware in their infrastructure. Pakistan, Australia, China and Indonesia are other countries that are spreading similar cybersecurity threats. The report also highlights that India is among the top three countries in the Apac region where companies are vulnerable to overt mining activities, along with China and Indonesia.

Public exploits are vulnerabilities in software code, websites, etc that are known to the security community and could allow hackers to break into a company’s systems. They are usually patched by software vendors etc, but IT teams often don’t deploy patches that leave companies vulnerable.

Dipesh Kaura, General Manager, South Asia, Kaspersky said: “While India is making progress in its cybersecurity initiatives, cybercriminals are not faltering, taking advantage of every opportunity and weakness. to target the area”.

The report also said that India is one of the key countries where hackers have the opportunity to remotely access devices, followed by Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam. Government organizations also account for a large share of the outreach. Kaura said collaboration between industry, government and law enforcement agencies to share technology and expertise can help build a safer world.
