IED students imagine hydrogen-powered Alpine supercars for 2035

Alpine recently returned with the A110 sports car, as well as its Formula 1 racing program and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). But now the Renault division is envisioning a hypercar for 2035.

The automaker recently presented students at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy, with instructions for designing a hydrogen-powered two-seat hypercar of the future. A group of 28 master’s students recently presented their interpretation of that idea — A4810.

Named for the height (in meters) of Mont Blanc, the most prominent Alpine mountain, the A4810 was designed around the theme of “subtraction,” Alpine said in a press release. The body shape takes advantage of the gaps, giving the car a sleeker profile and also allowing for F1-style aerodynamic assistance, according to Alpine.

Alpine doesn’t provide many powertrain details, but the press release mentions the engine and fuel tank, suggesting the A4810 uses hydrogen combustion engine rather than a fuel cell powertrain. The latter is likely to be harder to pack in the A4810’s slim body.

IED students have collaborated with automakers on other design projects in the past, including a modern interpretation of the car. Hispano-Suiza Alfonso XIII (considered one of the earliest sports cars) in partnership with current repetition of the Spanish-Swiss car company.

Alpine’s next production model is unlikely to be a hypercar. The automaker plans to switch to all-electric with a 3-car lineup, and we spotted one of those models testing. It’s a electric crossover called GT X-Overand it goes on sale in 2025. A hot hatchback and an electric replacement for the A110 are expected to follow.
