Huge Rajasthan Games Crisis as 80-Plus Gehlot MLA Team Threatens To Quit

The question of the next Chief Minister of Rajasthan has become a full-blown crisis for Parliament. More than 90 MLAs of Ashok Gehlot camp are in protest mode and have had a meeting with Speakers, announcing they want to resign.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. When told by reporters that mass resignations would bring down the government, one MLA said, “We want Ashok Gehlot as Head”, showed that they were expecting a concession from the central leadership on the issue of “one person, one card”. The alternative was a Gehlot loyalist at the top instead of Minister Sachin Pilot’s arch-rival, arguably the choice of Central leaders.

  2. The MLA meeting with Speaker, CP Joshi, lasted until midnight and will continue after that. They also had a meeting with Central observers – Mallikarjun Kharge and Rajasthan in charge of Parliament’s Ajay Maken – and Minister Ashok Gehlot.

  3. Sources said the party’s senior commander was extremely upset with the rebellion. Party leader Sonia Gandhi assigned tasks to Central leaders problem solving and they will have face-to-face meetings with the MLA. Sources said a one-line resolution would then be passed and the party chairman would be authorized to name the new minister.

  4. The sources said that while the party’s senior commander wanted the matter resolved as soon as possible, a section of the MLA did not expect the Legislative Party meeting to take place before a new party chairman was elected. .

  5. Sources also said Mr Gehlot had a phone conversation with KC central leader Venugopal about the developing situation, he said: “Nothing in my hand”.

  6. More than 90 Ashok Gehlot loyalists already have raised the issue of Pilot Sachin’s uprising in 2020 at a meeting in the early hours of this evening and said the Minister must be chosen from among the supporters of the government at that time.

  7. Outcry from Gehlot loyalists came after Rahul Gandhi insisted that “one man, one post” be followed, which would force Mr Gehlot to give up his top job in Rajasthan. He was the lead for the position of national president of the party, the election of which took place on 17 October.

  8. The legislative party meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. in the presence of central leaders, was not held. On returning to Jaipur from Jaisalmer, Mr. Gehlot spoke with Mr. Kharge and Mr. Maken. He then meets Mr Pilot and the 21 MLAs support him.

  9. Mr. Gehlot was very reluctant to give up his top job in Rajasthan to prevent the rise of arch-rival Sachin Pilot. Sources have said that in the event he fails to hold the post, he will want a loyal successor to succeed him. Earlier today, Mr Gehlot said, “All MPs agreed to keep their faith in the speaker of Parliament, and today too you will get a glimpse of that”.

  10. Mr Pilot, credited by many as the architect of the last parliamentary election victory, was considered the candidate for the top post but was persuaded by Rahul Gandhi to be Mr. Gehlot’s Deputy. In 2020, he rebelled, camping in Delhi for over a month with 18 supporters. The impasse was resolved with the intervention of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
