How an Insurgent Skate Squad Wound Up in a Polo Campaign

If you don’t know IC or somehow even Mikey, two of the guys might still look familiar: Sunny Suljic plays the leading young man in the series. Mid 90’s—And be the first to do kickflip on Tonight’s show. And Aramis Hudson joined NoHoplays the protagonist’s least likely but always supportive best friend, a highly dedicated role that has made him a standout in an all-star movie.

The new guy, meanwhile, is 20-year-old Santino Guzman – LA-based skater, surfer, and aspiring model. He met the boss the way everyone met the boss: he was a good skater. In fact, Mikey sent a deck of IC cards to Tino’s brother, who gave it to Tino, who slipped it, then posted it on Instagram. That clip found Mikey.

“Sometimes I watch clips of people and I just don’t care,” the boss said. “But I saw Tino and was like damned! “

“It was a stroke of luck. Really,” Tino said on the phone, on his way to filming in the schoolyard, because it was Sunday.

(He will also appear in IC’s long-awaited Wednesday video, tantalizingly titled “Hell Week.”)

And this was his first modeling job, what was it like for Ralph Lauren?

“Honestly, it’s not real,” he said. “I don’t know what to expect. But it feels good. It motivated me. ” He interrupts or interrupts, then concludes: “I. . . withering.”

This isn’t the first round of Polo with this most authentic street art (see the Palace Skateboards collaboration released in 2018 — the same year) Mid 90’s launch). But it feels special to Mikey, who has testified for many years RL is his favorite big brand.

The first time he visited RL HQ, the one above 5order Avenue in 2014 – so he’s 19 – flew out for the day while a mechanic named Tyshawn waited in the hallway. And, of course, he explains, he somehow met not with HR or PR but with an executive named Maura Manning. They talked for three hours, while Mikey took notes and laid out his ideas for world domination.

So is anyone surprised, since this is the plan so far? Or part of it?

Mikey said: “They styled us. “But I look classic Ralph. So next time, I want to style it myself.”

Next time?

“My dream is to get paid by Ralph Lauren to send me boxes of clothes that I would wear to the most stylish people—whether it’s skaters, celebrities, whoever…”

“And then I’ll make the video.”
