Haney can’t beat Kambosos Jr in Australia unless he KOs him says Jeff Mayweather
Via Allan Fox: Jeff Mayweather says Devin Haney can’t win the decisive bout with George Kambosos Jr next month on June 5 in Australia, and can only win the knockdown bout.
Jeff feels that WBC lightweight champion Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) has the talent to beat the IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO Kambosos champion (20-0, 10 KOs), but otherwise knocks. knock him down, he won’t have his last hand raised.
Australian Kambosos Jr will have the home field advantage against Haney for the undisputed 135 lb championship at Marvel Stadium, in Melbourne, Australia.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks it’s silly for boxing fans to think that Haney, 23, can’t win a decision because there’s no referee from Australia.
It’s not clear how Australia has gotten such a bad reputation among some fans, as it’s not a country known for its controversial decisions.
The bout that some believe was linked to the controversial score in favor of an Australian boxer was the July 2017 showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn in Brisbane.
Horn won the decisive 12th round after playing rough with Pacquiao. Arum says he feels the umpires made the right decision, as Horn fought well, using his size against a sluggish-looking Pacquiao.
“I used to coach Haney. I think he has a good chance of winning the war, but he won’t win in Australia“Jeff Mayweather said to Fighthype about WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney needs a knockout to beat unified champion George Kambosos Jr. on June 4.
“He won’t win in Australia unless he knocks him out, and that’s something he didn’t have,” Jeff said. “He has no knockout power, but anything can happen in the fight.”
If Jeff is right that Haney can win by knockout, then he probably loses because he’s not a puncher. Unless the Kambosos rushes in for a shot or sustains an injury, Haney will not score a knockout point in the fight.
“If it comes to a decision, I don’t think he’s going to win,” Jeff said. “I think it will be an uphill fight and a close one, even if the fight takes place here. Kambosos is a real guy who can also fight.
“He won’t fire anyone, and he showed it to Teofimo [Lopez]. At the time, I thought Teofimo was the best in that department, but Kambosos showed me otherwise.
“I think if you don’t beat him well there in the knockout or you win every round, there’s no way you’re going to come to a decision there, no way,” Mayweather said.
