Hands-on: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Looks Like a DLC Meat Giant

Monster Hunter Rise it’s awesome – if you haven’t played it, you just have to watch our review to see how much we loved it – so when Capcom asked if we’d love to have a new DLC expansion titled SunshineWe can’t say no.

We had to do just two of the missions offered when we visited Capcom’s UK offices, one looking for a Lunagaron and another taking down a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Classic, a Seregios.

Lunagaron is your standard quest, but we were happy to stumble across another new monster, a great ape-like thing called Garagolm. Suffice it to say that all three of these monsters made us completely stupid; anyone like us who feels that the base game is almost just a a little too easily will breathe a sigh of relief activating this expansion, just seconds before their internals are used to decorate the nest.

The Seregios Quest is also one of the new Followers Quests, which will pair you with an NPC to defeat a monster together. We had expected things to be a little different with the way they were presented, but our argument with Arlow felt almost like he hadn’t been around for a long time.

It might be because we’re used to playing against other hunters online, but we’re a bit disappointed that there’s not much more to the mode than just having that NPC there. Other Follower Quests could be more interesting (especially if they feature fan favorites like Minoto or Hinoa), but for now, we’ve let the encounter feel warm.

However, the opposite is also true of everything else we can do. The combination of new quality of life features like Swap Scrolls allows you to switch quickly between two loads of Transformation Skills, your different moves are shown on the screen, and Dango options new are substantial enough to elevate the Sunbreak experience to feel like a true refinement of what Rise introduced. Not only does it look like more quests and higher difficulty levels, it’s more of a game-wide upgrade that delivers more than you might reasonably expect for a DLC (a large assortment of DLC, expensive).

Small disappointments with Watcher Quest aside, our biggest complaint after using the game is how short it is; We feel like we’re only getting to see the tiniest part of what this new DLC has to offer and we can’t wait to sample more of it.

In short, it’s more of a Monster Hunter, but not just new monsters and new quests – it’s shaping up to be an essential, integral upgrade to the Monster Hunter Rise experience.
