Goodyear makes tires with 90% sustainable materials

Goodyear has created a prototype tire containing 90% sustainable materials that the company also believes could improve fuel economy and electric range.

According to a press release, the company calls a “demonstration tire,” which is not yet production-ready, but has passed all applicable regulatory tests, as well as Goodyear’s internal testing. That test also showed lower rolling resistance than comparable conventional tires, which increases performance and therefore reduces the amount of fuel or electricity needed to travel a certain distance.

Demonstration tires use 17 sustainable components or at least have a lower environmental impact than conventional tire materials on 12 tire components.

That includes four different types of carbon black, a common ingredient in tires used to reinforce rubber compounds. Coal soot is typically created by burning petroleum products, but Goodyear used methane, carbon dioxide, vegetable-based oils and expired tire pyrolysis oils as raw materials, the company said. claims to reduce carbon emissions.

Another green ingredient is soybean oil, which is used to keep the rubber compound flexible at different temperatures. According to Goodyear, it replaces petroleum-based and soy-based products left over from food and animal feed. The company already uses soybean oil in a number of manufactured tires, including racing tires.

There is also silica made from rice husks, polyester from recycled bottles, pine resin and polymers from bio-based materials. Goodyear claims that the steel for the wire of this radial tire is made from a high level of recycling, produced in an electric arc furnace that allows for more recycling and less energy to be used.

The tire won’t be made, but Goodyear plans to start producing tires with 70% sustainable materials this year. This happened just a year after Goodyear shows a concept tire with 70% sustainable content.

Goodyear isn’t the only company trying to make tires more sustainable. Bridgestone is developing natural rubber tires with desert shrubs from the American Southwest, while Michelin and Hyundai cooperated to make tires more eco-friendly.

Goodyear also has some further tire concepts. the company said last year that it was airless tire developmentand in 2020, it shows a reinvent the tire concept for the purpose of minimizing waste. Goodyear hasn’t discussed a firm timeline for commercializing those designs, but for now, promoting sustainable content is an important goal.
