Gennadiy Golovkin Says Dmitry Bivol Shows Canelo Alvarez Can Beat
Via Brian Webber: Gennadiy Golovkin says he always knew Canelo Alvarez was beatable, but it’s clear now after his one-sided loss to Dmitry Bivol last May.
Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) wants to give superstar Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) his second consecutive win on September 17 in a match against DAZN PPV at T- Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If 40-year-old Golovkin can follow the same blueprint that Bivol used, he has a great chance to raise his hand against Alvarez.
At this point in Golovkin’s career, he probably won’t change his fighting style to try and use the same tactics Bivol used to defeat Canelo, but he should at least give it a try.
Bivol’s tactics against Canelo:
- Attack in & out
- Combination punches
- Tightly guarded
- Powerful stab
Bivol’s emphasis on throw-ins kept Canelo busy defending, as it made his job difficult to launch counter-attacks.
Canelo’s Bread & Butter is his counterattack, but he’s not very good at countering when his opponent throws three or more punches in combination.
He is not comfortable leaving himself open to defense when his opponent launches combos, as he doesn’t want to get hit.
“I’ve known Canelo for a long time, and I’ve always known it was possible, and Dmitri Bivol just showed us that” Gennadiy Golovkin said to nypost about the recent defeat of Canelo Alvarez.
“Some experts have the illusion that Canelo is invincible; I never shared that opinion. That kind of loss brought the situation back to realityback to the actual state of things,” says Golovkin.
The loss showed the boxing public and the judgment that Canelo was not in error, and that he could be defeated by an intelligent and disciplined boxer.
“He will take our fight much more seriously, and it will be a completely different fight than the one against Bivol,” Golovkin said of Alvarez.
Canelo will research the flaws in his game that Bivol has exposed, and he will likely incorporate some of the things he did into his own game.
“I realized that the people who gave those scores, they have been used“Golovkin talks about the referee’s score in his first two matches against Canelo.
“They are used in the same way that disposable tissues are being used. It’s time to use them; they have been used and processed‘ said Golovkin.
