Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, said Tuesday that it’s very likely a cure for HIV will be available in 10 to 15 years or even sooner. In his new blog, titled ‘The future our children and grandchildren deserve‘ on Gates Notes, Bill Gates writes that with gene therapy, he is optimistic about the chances of ending AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
Gene therapy, writes Bill Gates, involves editing small parts of a person’s genetic makeup. “These edited genes can’t be passed on to the person’s children, but they can correct gene mutations that cause debilitating patients and deadly medical problems,” said Bill Gates.
How it works? The blog says that gene therapy involves removing the cells that make red blood cells, correcting their genetic code so their offspring have the right shape, and then returning them to your body.
