From TCS to Taj: Several Tata Group companies help revive Air India

NEW DELHI: In the cult classic Amar Akbar Anthony, a mother is saved by a simultaneous blood transfusion from her three long-lost sons. While that kind of exchange is probably medically impossible, the real-life encounter and reunion story of Tatas’ return to Air India is witnessing something similar as several conglomerate companies work together to revive their beloved Maharaja.
The flight arm of Taj Hotels TajSATS, back home from Day One of AI this January, has delivered improved in-flight meals, although to be fair, the food is still delicious right away. even during decades of state ownership.
AI MD & CEO Campbell Wilson has now detailed the role of other Tata companies in what is considered the most challenging aviation operational shift of the contemporary era.
“TajSATS is helping a lot in catering here. For cabin crew accommodation, (yes) Hotel India (Taj) Ltd. Tata Technologies helped design some outdated or out-of-stock airplane seat components or other components in the aircraft (by) 3D designing and manufacturing from scratch so we could accelerate seat repairs.” , said Wilson (52), an aviation veteran from Tatas’ longtime trusted airline partner Singapore Airlines (SIA).
Broken, torn, or non-functional business seats are taboo for passengers using AI, especially on wide-body seats used for medium to ultra-long flights. And their spare parts are not easy to find, which makes 3D production extremely important.
“In some cases, we have difficulty getting some parts because the chair product is quite old and in some cases it is no longer in production. Then you throw in the supply chain constraints that every industry is facing… The design of many of these components wasn’t as robust as chairs today. So we can fix a seat today and in a month’s time the same problem could recur. It’s that we’re building up a spare parts supply to keep fixing things that keep breaking down,” Wilson said.
Tata Group’s flagship TCS is a “significant contributor” to rebuilding the AI backbone. A team from Tata Business Excellence, consisting of representatives from almost every company in the group that specializes in business analytics to improve individual company performance, was at AI “helping us determine where to go. opportunities for improvement and efficiency”.
AI is getting the expertise of each group company depending on the strength of the latter. For example, procurement policies are being adopted from Tata Motors and Tata Steel to model for aircraft parts purchases and other activities.
“There is a huge amount of sharing within and across the Tata Group in both intellectual property and business practices,” he said.
Four Tata airlines – AI, AI Express, Vistara and AirAsia India – are also having more synergy with each other.
Vistara is bringing in pilots from AirAsia India. These airlines will accept each other’s passengers in the event of flight disruption.
