From New York to Paris: Highlights and surprises from Fashion Week

NEWYORK – Carly Mark, the designer of Puppet and Puppet, is known to be very fond of a Surrealist.”little joke. Her most famous creation is a black leather wallet decorated with the lifelike plastic sculpture of a chocolate chip cookie. (Each season, she releases new releases; most recently, they include leopard print and green velvet bags taped with dark bananas, fried eggs, and candy-coated macaroons à la. Little Debbie and a landline phone.)

But the best joke on her latest runway show isn’t a bag. Ms Mark said it was on the arm of a model who sat “very patiently” for about three hours while hundreds of black star stickers were applied to her arm. From a distance, the patches look like opera gloves, an accessory that is ubiquitous on today’s runways.

The bottom line is they’re not patches at all: They’re skin care company Starface’s acne patches, which feature tiny star-shaped hydrocolloid patches that come in a variety of colors. Brand fans often wear them over and over again. (Or at least in selfies. Ideas, like Fashionista put it in 2019, is to “make acne incurable.”) The black version seen on the Puppets and Puppets runway is yet to be sold.

Ms Mark, who has worked with makeup artist Fara Homidi, said the patch gloves came from a desire to “elevate the collection in unexpected ways”. But they also appeal to her as something that exists between makeup and clothing — and fits the brand’s sense of humor through change.

“I love Surrealist moments, anything trompe l’oeil, things that feel fresh,” Ms. Mark said. – Jessica Testa
