Croatia’s Marin Cilic made it through to the semifinals of the 2022 French Open after beating Russia’s Andrey Rublev in a five-set match at Phillippe-Chatrier on Wednesday, June 1.

As the higher ranked player of the two, Rublev started the match with a win in the first set. But Cilic made a spectacular comeback and won the second and third sets. Rublev, somehow, got his footing back in the competition after winning the fourth set.

In the fifth and final set, both Cilic and Rubley punched each other and it became a tie-breaker. Since then, Rublev seems to have lost a lot of steam and Cilic just kept stirring from one point to another.

Cilic was excellent at stopping the winners as he pulled 88 of them compared to his opponent’s 35.

Cilic next faced winners Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in the semifinals. In the other semi-final, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who has won 13 French Open titles, and world number 3 Alexander Zverev will lock the whistle.

In women’s singles, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasaktina will face each other in a semi-final. In the other semi-final, Coco Gauff of America and Martina Trevisan will be fencing.

Gauff will be in her first Grand Slam semi-final after she beat Sloane Stephens of America in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
