One thing about Beyoncéshe can certainly cause an uproar, but her most recent album has ruffled more than she could have anticipated.
While Bey Hive Still Replays ‘Renaissance’, Musical Duo of the 90s Fred is right are calling Beyoncé out for allegedly sampling one of their songs without permission. Born brothers Fred and Richard Fairbrass spoke to The Sun and called Bey an “arrogant” for singing samples of her 1992 single ‘I’m Too Sexy’ on her track ‘Alien Superstar’.
Normally artists approach us but Beyoncé doesn’t because she is an arrogant person. She was probably just thinking ‘come and make me go’ so we heard about that after the fact that you did. But all the others, Drake and Taylor Swift, they came to us.”
The ’90s hit has been sampled by many major artists, including Drake, who used the track on his 2021 song ‘Way 2 Sexy’.
To use our tunes they need our permission so they send us the demo and we approve it and if so we get co-writing credit. With this Beyoncé, there are 22 writers, it’s ridiculous so we’ll get about 40 [pounds]. “
The duo explained the small profit cut, saying, “We think the reason it’s happening is because there’s so little money right now in actual sellers like friends, golf partners, engineers, Reservations staff and cup bearers, all want a cut.”
Additionally, the British couple told The Sun they believe they are “powerless” compared to Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who are worth $1.5 billion in total.
We cannot prevent it. There is nothing we can do here. It is sh*t. You will start a conversation with someone who has more power and money than us. And that’s not going to go well. Best let it go. If you’re not careful, it will take you a lifetime to look back. We continue to look forward to it all the time.”
The Fairbrass brothers weren’t the first to come see Bey and her new album. Kelis also accused the ‘Single Ladies’ singer of using her 2003 hit ‘Milkshake’ on the album.
