Ford patented a roof-mounted airbag

Ford has applied for a patent for roof-mounted airbags that deploy from the roof and occupants for enhanced crash protection.

The application was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 7, 2021 and published on October 13, 2022. The application shows the top-mounted ring housings. each seat, from which the airbags will deploy.

However, “airbag” doesn’t quite describe what Ford is proposing. Instead of conventional airbags, the patent application’s drawings show egg-shaped elements that would surround the vehicle’s occupants, each covered by cylinders that could inflate and create The impact absorption effect is similar to that of conventional airbags.

Ford says the technology is designed to work on passenger and commercial vehicles with different body styles, including sedans, coupes, pickups, SUVs and minivans. But it might be easier to pack the roof-mounted airbags. explore more than one Mustang.

Blue Oval also says these airbags are designed for self-driving cars. Some drawings even show two rows of seats facing each other—a layout that seems to suggest a self-driving car. It is worth noting that, shortly after this patent application was announced, Ford and the Volkswagen Group withdrew capital from autonomous driving technology startup Argo AI, forcing it to shutdown.

Ford’s interest in self-driving cars may be wavering, but the automaker is continuing to test new safety technology for conventional cars. Ford also recently filed a patent for a external airbag system will deploy from behind the vehicle’s grille in the event of a collision. But the patent application doesn’t automatically translate into a production plan, so it’s unclear if we’ll see either of these new airbag systems in cars sold to customers.
