Firefighters are dealing with a “massive gas explosion” in Bedford.

Emergency services are warning people to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

Photos from the scene showed a row of apartments on fire.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “We are currently at a major gas explosion in Redwood Grove, Bedford.

“There are currently six devices, two water tankers, and an incident command unit at the scene. Please avoid this area and close windows and doors.”

Adam Fisher told the PA news agency: “A huge explosion [was] heard – people came to our work parking lot to see what was going on.

“Our building was adjacent to an apartment complex – immediately saw a hell of a[was]a huge cloud of smoke billowing, people screaming and people frantically calling emergency services. “

Bedfordshire Police said in a tweet: “We are aware of an incident this morning in Redwood Grove, Bedford. All emergency services are aware and are involved.

“We will provide more information as we have but will ask people to avoid the area at this time.”
