Fewer mpox infection symptoms after vaccination

According to research published in the December 30 issue of the US Centers for Disease Control, people who become infected with mpox ≥14 days after receiving a dose of JYNNEOS vaccine are less likely to be hospitalized, have fewer fevers, headaches, irritability, muscle aches and chills than those who have not been vaccinated and prevented Weekly report on morbidity and mortality.

Jennifer L. Farrar, MPH, from the CDC’s Mpox Emergency Response Team, and colleagues describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of mpox cases occurring ≥14 days after receiving a dose of vaccine JYNNEOS and compared them with the characteristics of people who had not been vaccinated with mpox. The analysis included 6,605 cases of mpox between May 22 and September 3, 2022, with vaccination information available.

The researchers found that overall, 276 cases (4.2%) occurred in people who received a single dose of the vaccine ≥14 days before the onset of illness. MPox cases that occurred in vaccinated versus unvaccinated individuals had a lower rate of hospitalization (2.1 versus 7.5 percent), fever, headachemalaise, muscle aches and chills.

“Although infection 14 days after a single dose of JYNNEOS vaccine is uncommon, the occurrence of such cases and the undetermined duration of protection from a single dose of vaccine suggest the need to there are service providers and public health officials to encourage completion of a two-dose series of immunizations for at-risk populations,” the authors wrote.
