Federer and Nadal team up for doubles on Friday at Laver Cup

Swiss icon Roger Federer will close the curtain on his glittering career by teaming up with great rival Rafa Nadal at the Laver Cup on Friday.

The 41-year-old announced last week that the team event played at the O2 Arena in London would be his last.

Doubting Federer’s right knee, injury forcing him to call time in a 24-year career that includes 20 Grand Slam singles titles and worldwide admiration, means he will feature in a single match. Most of the three-day clash between captain Bjorn Borg Europe and John McEnroe was the rest of the world.

But the fact that he will bow in his final match against record 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal alongside him is a dream prospect. They will face American duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in the final match on Friday.

“It would be a different kind of pressure to be a part of this historic moment,” Nadal, who has shared a long career rivalry with Federer, told reporters.

“It’s going to be something amazing and unforgettable for me. I’m excited. Maybe we can create a good moment and maybe win the game.”

Federer is in a comfortable shape sitting with his European teammates, including 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and three-time major winner Andy Murray.

He had said the day before that it would be nice to play his last match on the same net with Spaniard Nadal and captain Borg, unsurprisingly being forced.

“I’m not sure I can handle (all the emotions) but I’ll try,” said Federer, whose fan presence had flocked to Thursday’s training sessions. know.

“The feeling is completely different. I’m happy to have him on my team and not have to play against him.

“To be able to do it again, I’m sure it’ll be awesome and I’ll do my best.”
