Father and son team ‘Team Mason’ prepares for Eversource Hartford Marathon

(WFSB) – The Eversource Hartford Marathon is less than a month away, but runners are already gearing up for the race.

The marathon is expected to feature thousands of runners, but one team has a special mission for their run.

Meet Team Mason, a father and son team from Hartford.

Jim Joyce, Mason’s father, has run more than 60 races, some of them with his son Mason.

“I want to give him the best, the best life I can give him. The journey with Mason is a wonderful one. “We do different races, we do different events,” Joyce said.

Mason has a significant disability. Joyce has devoted her life to taking care of him and making him happy.

“If he’s having a good day and he’s doing well, that means I’m doing what I have to do. I’m taking care of my son and he’s taking care of me,” Joyce said.

Running has become a big part of what makes Mason and Joyce happy.

“The Hartford Marathon is our Super Bowl. It’s our Daytona, we love that race,” Joyce said.

Mason was born with cerebral palsy. He has never walked, but he has walked many miles with his father.

“Mason is like the unofficial mayor of Hartford. They were shouting his name, they had weights and everyone in the race was patting me on the shoulder and saying keep it up,” Joyce said.

Joyce says he started jogging to get in better shape so he can take better care of Mason.

Joyce said: “I’m really lucky that he’s with me and I’m with him too.

The running community is growing to help people with disabilities. There are more adaptive running seats available for people with disabilities. For more information, click here.
