Since its debut Shovel Knight back in 2014, the 2D adventure title by Yacht Club Games has since evolved into a full-fledged franchise thanks to the inclusion of spin-off titles. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and Shovel Knight Digi. The latter is the latest release from the franchise and is available now on the Switch eShop; Be sure to check out our full review for all our thoughts on the roguelite foundation.
Of course, in addition to the three downloadable story campaigns for Shovel Knight, the introduction of Shovel Knight Dig means that the overall story and lore for the franchise has also expanded considerably. It begs the question: when does Shovel Knight Dig take place, and what is the full Shovel Knight timeline?
Well, we spoke to Yacht Club Game Marketing Director Celia Schilling to get some much-needed answers. We dive into the aforementioned Shovel Knight timeline, the Hexavator and the Order of No Quarter, and the history of the Mole Knight and Tinker Knight.
Nintendo Life: Given that Specter of Torment is also a prequel to Shovel of Hope, where exactly does Shovel Knight Dig fit?
Celia Schilling, Marketing Manager, Yacht Club: Story wise, Shovel Knight Dig is the first game in the Shovel Knight series. That makes it a prequel that takes place even before Specter of Torment! You may remember the intro line from the first Shovel Knight game – “Long ago the lands were untamed and roamed by legendary adventurers.” Well, Dig will take you back to these good days, when Shovel Knight and Shield Knight went on quests together, fighting bad guys and searching for treasure! We hope fans will be interested in playing the events leading up to the original story.
Aside from the obvious fact that they’re new creations for this game, is there any good reason why the new knights aren’t joining the Order of No Quarter?
The first is the Drill Knight, the leader of the Heexcavator – as a well-known crime mastermind, he could see the job of Order as a low-level position. Besides… once he teamed up for Dig, I’m pretty sure he learned that joining a larger team means the wealth splits further.
As for the Scrap Knight, Hive Knight and Spore Knight, they may have reasons not to join the Order later on – reasons you’ll discover while playing Dig! Despite that, I don’t think the Enchantress will appreciate all the trash, bushes, and room stents that have infiltrated the Tower of Fate.
And conversely, is there any reason why other members of Linghu Chong did not join the Six Paths?
Hmmm, a good reason? They haven’t met yet! Specter Knight is still Donovan! So he is doing thefts with Luhan in the land of life. The treasure knight is busy being a pirate. King Knight is still free to stay at his mother’s house to eat cake etc. Maybe you will learn even more in Dig…
As the developer, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove has the story of Plague Knight, Specter Knight and King Knight. When creating the Shovel Knight Dig, we wanted to highlight some of the other members of the Order! From there, it’s an elimination process. The Propeller Knight was hovering in the sky so it didn’t make any sense for him to be on the ground. Maybe the Polar Knight would be too uncomfortable to be below earth…and so on. We specifically picked Mole Knight because we think changing his outfit to something else is really funny. His internal name was “Aqua Mole Knight” for the longest time. Maybe in the next game he’ll have an electric or grass-themed suit! As for Tinker Knight, the little tech guy is just right. All bandits need the brains behind the bravery! We’re sure we’ll introduce more of our colorful cast of characters at some point in the future. Who do you think will be interesting to watch next?
How will this game explore the history of both Mole Knight and Tinker Knight, since both are Hexavator at this point?
Shovel Knight Dig gave us the opportunity to find out who Tinker Knight and Mole Knight are. Tinker Knight signed with Hexavator as an engineer! The little schemer finds interest in the interesting problems to be solved beneath their earth. On the other hand, Mole Knight joined the team after he was captivated by Drill Knight’s tunneling abilities! We don’t want to spoil too much, so you’ll have to play this game to learn more about the deep interpersonal dynamics of the Heexcavators!
Thank you so much Celia Schilling for taking the time to chat with us. Shovel Knight Dig is available now on the Nintendo Switch eShop for $24.99 / £22.49.
