European Union gives final approval to law forcing Apple to switch to USB Type-C

The European Union today gave its final approval to the generic charger directive. The law mandates the use of USB Type-C ports for a variety of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and headsets. Then it will no longer be necessary to purchase another charger every time a new mobile phone or similar device is purchased in Europe.

The rule will have a great influence on Apple because the company will be forced to ditch the obsolete Lightning port on its iPhones in favor of the USB-C port already used by many Android rivals.

The decision is announced by Council of the EU through a press release. It says that having a universal charger will improve consumer convenience by harmonizing the charging interface and fast charging technology, and will significantly reduce e-waste.

“We all have at least three cell phone chargers at home. Finding the right charger, at home or at work, can be quite frustrating. On top of that, these chargers generate up to 11,000 tons of e-waste each year. “Having a charger suitable for many devices will save money and time and also help us reduce e-waste,” said Jozef Síkela, Minister of Industry and Trade.

What are the new EU rules?

New regulations will mandate the use of USB Type-C charging ports for all electronic devices. The directive also allows consumers to choose to purchase a new device with or without a charger. “This will not only save consumers money, but also reduce the amount of e-waste associated with the manufacture, transport and disposal of chargers,” the rule states.

To enable this technology to be available to more devices, the Commission will work to harmonize wireless charging of electronic devices and interoperability based on the evolution of the technology.

List of devices affected by the move

The new rules will apply to a wide range of mobile devices. Including

– Mobile phone

– Tablets and e-readers

– Digital cameras and video game consoles

– Headphones, earbuds and portable speakers

– Wireless keyboard and mouse

– Mobile navigation system

In addition, all notebook computers will also be subject to the new regulations 40 months after the directive comes into effect.
