Electric SUV definitely touches the ‘Ring

Kia is developing a big, burly battery-powered SUV, and new prototypes have been spotted.

The SUV is the production version of the EV9 . concept debut at the 2021 Los Angeles auto show and we should see it arrive in dealerships in the second half of 2023, possibly a 2024 model.

Prototypes for the production EV9 point to an SUV similar in styling to the featured show car, but with reduced design details. Kia CEO told Engine Authority EV9 . concept represent about 80-90% what we will see on the production model.

The interior will be toned down a bit compared to the concept. That said, the concept’s floating display for the instrument cluster and infotainment center is similar to what’s found in the update. 2023 Kia Tellurideability.

In terms of size, we can once again look at Kia’s mid-displacement Telluride car for reference. The EV9 concept in LA is about 194 inches long, or about 3 inches shorter than the Telluride, and the production EV9 appears to be about the same size. Expect the EV9’s interior space to be larger than the Telluride’s thanks to the electric powertrain, and as is the case with the Telluride, a third row of seats will be offered.

The platform for the car will be Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform. The platform has an 800-volt electrical system, two-way charging, and delivers 576 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque on Kia’s EV6 GT.

Judging by some of the specs of the EV9 concept, the production model will have a range of around 300 km and the ability to charge the battery from 10 to 80% in less than 30 minutes. Fast charging is possible when using a 350 kw charger.

Kia is about to jump into EVs in a big way. The automaker has a plan 14 EVs in 2027, including electric pickup trucks. We can expect at least two Kia EVs to hit the market each year between 2023 and the end of 2027.

Hyundai will also launch more EVs in the coming years. One of them will be a large SUV combined with an EV9. Hyundai will be called the Ioniq 7 and we got a preview of it at the 2021 LA auto show in the form of Seven concepts.
