EKG designer detects her own heart block with hand-held mobile-cardia device

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Dozens of people took part in the American Heart Association’s annual Walk for the Heart Saturday morning in Milwaukee.

But for one man, walking in the event had a special meaning.

Two years ago, Matt Pemberton, GE Healthcare’s director of core solutions, was shoveling snow in his driveway when suddenly he started having trouble breathing.

“I can’t just take deep breaths. I don’t have chest pain, so I go inside and it goes away very quickly,” Pemberton said. “That’s why I don’t think it is much.”

But when he decided to go out again soon after, Pemberton said the same feeling happened within minutes.

“I went in and my wife said, ‘hey, you should go to the doctor and do an electrocardiogram,'” Pemberton said.

Luckily, that’s when he remembered he got a portable cardia device from “a swag bag from my boss.”

“I got it. It just has a heart view unlike the ones we do at GE, it’s a lot more comprehensive. Although not allowed to do this, I had the insight. knowledge of how to read an EKG. So I was able to read and noticed there was a problem and I went to the hospital,” Pemberton said. “The device doesn’t tell me it’s bad, I just know from my experience that I need to see a doctor.”

Upon arrival, Pemberton was diagnosed with a heart block commonly known as the “widow maker”.

He claims the device saved his life.

“My doctor said that any time I turned around, I could easily have blocked that artery and died in the driveway,” Pemberton said.

Now years later, he’s undergone a complete lifestyle change from exercising more to eating healthier.

“I feel great. It’s been two years since I had open-heart surgery,” Pemberton said. “I have lost weight and feel very well.”

His advice? Always take care of your health.

“[My doctor] check my cholesterol now twice a year. I haven’t tested it before,” Pemberton said. Take care of yourself. If I have any message for anyone. You don’t need equipment to do it. “
