Durand Cup: Greg Stewart hat-trick sends Mumbai City into semi-finals after 8-goal thriller | Football news

KOLKATA: Scottish striker Greg Stewart scored an excellent hat-trick like Mumbai City FC prevail over Chennaiyin FC 5-3 in extra time in a thrilling quarter-final to advance to the semi-finals of Durand Cup soccer tournament on Sunday.
Stewart scored in the 40th, 100th and 118th minutes while Lallianzuala Chhangte scored twice in the 78th and 94th minutes for the Mumbai side at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
Croatian strikers Petar Sliskovic (59th), Jockson Dhas (89th) and Rahim Ali (112) scored for Chennaiyin. The Islanders face Mohammedan Sporting in their first semi-final at the same venue on Wednesday.
Chennaiyin’s Ghanaian striker Kwame Karikari was injured and had to be substituted for Rahim Ali in the 19th minute of the match.
The first goal of the game came from a penalty awarded to Mumbai as Ahmed Jahouh played Amay Ranawade in the box and goalkeeper Debjit knocked him down. Stewart took the kick and although Debjit guessed it right and used his hand to do it, he couldn’t stop the ball from going into the net.
Chennaiyin gaffer Tomas Brdaric took Ninthoi’s place for Edwin Vanspaul at halftime and it turned out to be an inspiring replacement.
The first goal came just before the hour. Ninthoi had the assist with a great gliding ball played in the box predicting Sliskovic’s run. Croat took the lead over Rostyn Griffiths and delivered a powerful header past the diving Lachenpa in the near corner.
Mumbai coach Des Buckingham made his move, bringing in Mourtada Fall for the first time of the season and Gurkirat in place of Mehtab and Rippol. Brdaric also replaced Aakash Sangwan with Sajid Dhot.
Mumbai probably thought they had a goal thanks to a classy tackle from Stewart in the middle of Chennaiyin in the 78th minute. He walked around before running towards the box with defenders on his side and then Drop Bipin Singh on the left.
Bipin’s cross was blocked by Debjit but only until Chhangte lurked into the post. The tournament’s top scorer to date made no mistake, scoring with ease in the sixth of the tournament.
Brdaric then made another substitution, again paying a dividend when he brought Jockson Dhas to Sajal Bag.
With a minute left until the allotted time, Ninthoi, who was busy on the right flank, held out another inviting float inside the box. Fall was the first to encounter it but his clearing header only goes as far as Jockson is hiding in the far post. The player on the pitch as a substitute knocked down and launched a powerful right-footed volley that hit the opponent’s net.
Both Stewart and Ninthoi also had chances for themselves in injury time but regulation time ended 2-2.
However, Chhangte continued to score in the fourth minute of extra time. Stewart takes the free kick after Gurkirat is fouled and his header finds Mourtada Fall in the far corner. He caught the volley towards the center of the six-yard ring and Chhangte was in the right spot unmarked to head it past Debjit. It was his seventh goal in the Durand Cup.
Stewart had the second of the game and the fifth of the tournament in the 100th minute. He made one of his solos inside the box and made two attempts at one shot before letting go of his left hand. in the third round, to defeat Debjit comprehensively.
If Mumbai thought the game was paused, they would be surprised. CFC was awarded a corner in the second half of extra time and Thapa served firmly. After a few touches, Duker fired a shot but cleverly passed it to Rahim to the left. The Indian striker hit the net with a thunderous shot.
With the CFC furiously pursuing the game, Stewart eventually signed with the Islanders. On a counter, Chhangte found Stewart running and playing him. The Scot, with a marker on his shoulder, stepped back and put his favorite left foot past diving Debjit to complete a well-deserved hat-trick and win the Durand Cup for the sixth time.
