Dove dry shampoo recall: A reality check for Indian customers
This week, dry shampoo consumers received a huge shock when Unilever USA recalled certain Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI and TRESemmé spray dry shampoos because of the potential presence of benzene. – a chemical that can cause cancer.
It should be noted that the recalled products are still available on popular Indian e-commerce sites such as Flipkart, Myntra and Amazon.
However, the company has only recalled “dry shampoo“and not regular shampoo.
Besides, customers using dry shampoo in India, especially brands like Dove or TRESemmé, should not be alarmed as HUL mentioned “The affected products have been distributed nationwide in India” US and Canada in retail stores and online”.
The US Food and Drug Administration said the affected products were manufactured before October 2021.
What is dry shampoo?

What is the controversial HUL dry shampoo?
HUL recalled some shampoo aerosol products manufactured before October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé due to possible elevated concentrations of benzene.
Benzene is a human carcinogen. Exposure to it can occur by inhalation, by mouth, or through the skin. It can cause cancer including leukemia and blood cancer.
While the FDA doesn’t set a benzene limit for cosmetics like dry shampoo, the agency says the products must not contain “any toxic or harmful substance.”

Last year, Procter & Gamble (PG) recalled more than 30 aerosol hair care products, including a variety of dry shampoos and conditioners, warning that these products may contain benzene.
Cosmetics company L’Oréal has been sued for claiming that its chemical hair straightening products put women at increased risk of uterine cancer.
