Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes are doing each other’s dirty work. The Strange things and Riverdale stars will share screens in Netflix’s dark comedy Revenge, which follows the aforementioned unlikely high school duo, each teaming up to fight the other’s bully.
For the Type A queen bee Drea (Mendes), the target is her “fake wake” ex-boyfriend Max, who leaked the sex tape and ruined her life. For Eleanor (Hawke), it’s Carissa, a girl who started a bad homophobic rumor that basically ruined her as a teenager. As Eleanor says in the trailer, she doesn’t just want to make herself pay, she wants to “burn her to the ground.” And that’s exactly what she and Drea set out to do.
Revenge mark the movie year two from Someone awesome director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who drew inspiration from iconic high school films of the ’80s and ’90s, such as John Hughes’ classics and Jawbreaker, Evil intentionsand 10 Things I Hate About You. “And so we reverse-engineered this revenge story from: What would it be like to take the fun, horror stakes of a Hitchcock movie and put it in high school?” Robinson previously told ELLE.com.
