Delhi: Second phase of Chandni Chowk redevelopment project to start soon


With the successful completion of the first phase of the Chandni Chowk redevelopment project in 2021, the Delhi government will soon begin the second phase of the project.

During a meeting on the matter, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia discussed plans for phase two with department officials on Monday.

In phase two of the redevelopment project, the government aims to revive and beautify the historic architecture of buildings in the Chandni Chowk area. This will be done by maintaining a balance between historic and modern architectural designs.

The project includes preserving heritage structures according to original materials and construction techniques, retrofitting structures, restoring and unifying the facades of heritage structures, colors and signage schemes for the sites. shops, lighting and illuminating the facades of shops and buildings, and interpreting the plot of the structural heritage on various points using arrays and QR codes to enhance the visitor experience .

While speaking about the project, Manish Sisodia said, ”The Delhi government has completed the first phase of the Chandni Chowk redevelopment in 2021 and the public response to it has been huge’.

The first phase focused on clearing the area and landscape to enhance the shopping experience for visitors. The Delhi government has refurbished the 1.3 km stretch of red sandstone and granite pavement between the Red Fort and Fatehpuri Masjid. Landscapes of the 17th century market were made and CCTV systems were installed to ensure the safety of visitors. In an effort to make the market pedestrian-friendly, this stretch has been declared a “no-traffic zone” for motor vehicles from 9:00am to 9:00pm

“In the initial phase, we focused on cleaning the area and the landscape to improve the shopping experience for visitors. To add to that, the government will now focus on architectural restoration. of historical buildings and shops in this area. This will enhance the look and feel of Chandni Chowk and will provide a unique experience for visitors,” added Sisodia.

The deputy minister added that under the current circumstances, Chandni Chowk has a mix of historic and modern architectures that have emerged over the years, at the request of the locals in the area. But to provide a unified view of the market, these buildings require an improvement.

Talking about the implementation of the redevelopment plan, Sisodia said, “Officials will ensure that no inconvenience is caused to the owners of the local shops and historic buildings”.

Along with that, the government is also planning to renovate the roads of the Shahjahanabad area to provide a better shopping experience for visitors and a better opportunity to explore Delhi’s cultural heritage, he said. .
