Original Dead Island 2 revealed the trailer is now an iconic (perhaps infamous) moment in the game. It was a great trailer, people were excited, and then fast forward almost a decade later, and the game is still in development.
First revealed in 2014, Dead Island 2 is in development at Spec Ops: The Line Yager developer, with Dead Island developer Techland parting ways with the property to work on Dying light. Deep Silver Publishing House handing over game development to LittleBigPlanet 3 developer Sumo Digital in 2016 and then, in 2019, the company announced that the developer of Homefront: The Revolution Dambuster Studios will develop Dead Island 2. It’s 2023 and Dambuster’s Dead Island 2 will be out in Aprilfinal.
dams revealed the new Dead Island 2 last year and it did so with a fancy new cinematic trailer, albeit a very different one from the original 2014 trailer, which isn’t exactly surprising – Dambuster says they developed Dead Island 2 from an obvious means, from the ground up. During Dead Island 2’s 8-hour outing at the Dambuster’s Nottingham, UK location, I was curious: would the team ever consider remaking the original Dead Island 2 trailer? The answer is no.
Dead Island 2 game director David Stenton told me, “We’re not really interested in remaking the trailer. “I think it’s interesting to take that trailer – especially now where the trailer is – and see how it applies to the Dead Island tone we’re distributing. that was definitely sent on LA postcards and I think we send LA postcards in a different way.”
However, I wonder if Dambuster would use that initial trailer as a guide to the game’s development, especially given how well received it was back in 2014 (even Goat Simulator 3 recently remade the trailer).
“Not really,” said Stenton. “We started with a clear leaderboard, completely with our own vision. We didn’t look too much into… what happened in the past or look at too many other games out there. We’re just really focused on how we want to make Dead Island 2 completely extraordinary, update it and deliver a game that we think fans will really enjoy.”
