CWG 2022: PM Modi congratulates Achinta Sheuli on winning gold
Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli lifted 313 Kg (143kg, 170kg) to win gold while his opponent Ery Hidayat Muhammad of Malaysia only lifted 303kg (138kg 165kg). Canada’s Shad Darsigny finished third with a total weight of 298kg (135kg 163kg).
“I am very happy. After overcoming many difficulties, I have won this medal. I will dedicate this medal to my brother and my coaches. Next, I will prepare for the Olympics. society,” Achinta Sheuli told ANI, after making the country proud.
With the gold medal of Achinta Sheuli, India has won a total of 3 gold medals at the CWG Games 2022 up to now. In addition, India won the sixth medal among the games.
Delighted by his efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Achinta, “Delighted that the talented Achinta Sheuli has won the Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games. He is known for his calm nature and perseverance. He worked very hard for this exceptional achievement. I extend my best wishes to him for his future endeavors. “
Prime Minister Modi also shared an old video of him interacting with Achint in the hope that he will have time to watch a movie after winning the medal. In the video, Prime Minister Modi can be seen asking Sheuli about the latter’s calm and focused behavior as well as how the budding star enjoyed the movie but was unable to watch it due to his busy schedule.
Modi later said that once the young athlete returned with the gold medal, he could watch the movie, as he would have plenty of time to entertain himself.
President Draupadi Murmu also congratulated the boy, “Achinta Sheuli made India proud by winning the gold medal and making the tricolor fly high at #CommonwealthGames. You instantly overcome failure in one attempt and top the squad. You are the champion who made history. Warm congratulations!”
Achinta Sheuli started weightlifting in 2012, inspired by her older brother Alok. Achinta’s older brother, Alok, gave up the sport and started working as a hired hand to help support the family after his father passed away in 2014.
Achinta Sheuli lost her father, Pratik, a laborer, in April 2014. Elder brother Alok recounted that Achinta cried because they did not have money to pay for his father’s funeral.
Achinta Sheuli is from Kolkata, he was raised in Deulpur, a two hour bus ride from Howrah.
