Current depression associated with systemic inflammation in psoriasis

According to a study published online December 21 in the journal Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Georgia Lada, MD, from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, and colleagues used data from the UK Biobank for middle-aged to older adults to examine the correlation between current depression and lifetime with neutrophil counts, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and highly sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP) in Psoriasis. Analysis included 5,485 psoriasis patient; 4,796 have lifelong depression data.

The researchers found that compared with patients receiving topical or untreated patients, patients receiving systemic treatment had higher numbers of CRP, NLR, and neutrophils, indicating activity of systemic disease is higher. No association was found for CRP or NLR with current or lifetime depression, although there was a trend toward lifelong depression effects for CRP. When body mass index was omitted from the models, the CRP depression associations were significant. Gender modified the effect of association between neutrophil and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), used to assess current depression. For women, the association between PHQ-2 scores and neutrophil counts was greater and more significant, even after accounting for lifelong depression. In both sexes, lifelong depression was associated with higher neutrophil counts.
