Top sprinter S Dhanalakshmi is said to have been disqualified from the upcoming Commonwealth Games after failing a dope test, while triple jumper holds the national record. Aishwarya Babu has also tested positive for banned substances.

Dhanalakshmi, who is on the 36-member Indian track and field team for the Birmingham CWG, tested positive for a banned steroid during a dope test conducted abroad by the Athletics Integrity Unit. World Economy (AIU).

“Dhanalakshmi has tested positive in a dope test conducted by the AIU. She will not be going to Birmingham CWG,” a top development source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Dhanalakshmi was named to the CWG for 100m and 4x100m relay team alongside the likes of Dutee Chand, Hima Das and Srabani Nanda. She was also on the Indian team for the ongoing World Championships in Eugene, USA, but was unable to make it to the show, apparently due to visa issues.

Dhanalakshmi recorded a personal best time of 22.89 seconds to win the 200 m gold medal at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet on June 26. She became the third Indian woman to run under. 23 years old behind national record holders Saraswati Saha (22.82 seconds) and Hima Das (22.88 seconds).

A dope sample of Aishwarya, 24, taken by NADA officials during the National Interstate Athletics Championships in Chennai last month, also tested positive.

The source said: “Aishwarya Babu’s t-shirt, taken during the National Inter-Country Championships, has tested positive.

Aishwarya broke the national record of jumping three times with a superb effort at 14.14m to become the undisputed star of the National Senior Athletics Championships (June 10-14) in Chennai.
