Coffee does not slow the absorption of thyroid medication
That’s good news for patients who have previously been asked to take levothyroxine 30-60 minutes before coffee to avoid drug interactions.
“The lifestyle adjustments required to adhere to these recommendations often burden patients and can lead to difficulty achieving hormone levels,” said Kris Washington, PharmD, Medical Director of Vertice Pharma in Berkeley. ideal thyroid gland, leading to frustration for both patients and service providers.” Heights, NJ, drug manufacturing company.

Washington and colleagues sought to investigate the absorption profile of levothyroxine sodium oral solution taken with coffee compared with fasting conditions in a bioavailability study in 40 healthy adults.
The researchers administered an oral dose of 600 μg of the LT4 solution 5 minutes before giving adults 8 ounces of American coffee or under fasting conditions during each study period.
They collected blood samples to measure thyroid levels for 48 hours after each dosing, followed by 40 days of wash-out between study periods.
These results confirm the bioequivalence of a single dose of 600 μg of levothyroxine sodium oral solution taken 5 minutes before coffee or under fasting conditions.
“The results demonstrate that absorption of levothyroxine sodium oral solution is not affected by coffee consumption, potentially providing patients and providers with greater dosing flexibility,” Washington said. .
