If you’re an auto enthusiast, you know, recognize and probably idolize GM’s turbocharged car Engine LT4 V8. High-powered V8s make at least 650 hp, sometimes more, In The most serious and capable performance cars to debut General: Corvette Chevy C7 Z06, Camaro ZL1and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Escalade-DRAW. While LT4 is only used in one a handful of meansit is almost included in another, more unexpected application.

The LT4 almost made it to Chevrolet’s Tahoe RST Performance Edition. That’s at least what sources close to the matter tell GM agency. If you’re not familiar, Tahoe RST Performance Edition is a slightly hotter version of the Tahoe RST. And when I say a little, I mean it. Slightly tweaking the engine to a 6.2-liter V8 results in an additional 13 hp and 7 lb-ft of torque for a total of 433 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque. Nothing to sneeze for sure. It’s enough to get this huge SUV to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds, which is very impressive for something that weighs almost 6,000 pounds. And more power would be enthusiastically welcomed, especially if it comes in LT4 form. So why is it not used?

The GM Authority has elucidated in detail why, instead engaging in speculation. But, I decided to ask someone at Chevy myself. Blue Bowtie explains that a Tahoe with an LT4 would cost too much – that it would be cheaper to go the simple route of calibrating the existing 6.2L for a bit more horsepower than dropping in a V8 High performance, hand-built Tahoe GM (emphasis mine):

Chevrolet has intentionally selected the 6.2L engine with performance tuning and touch system for the RST Performance Edition. This implementation gives customers a solid performance boost, while still being able to deliver performance instances with affordable price.

So there it is. We aren’t getting a bargain Escalade-V. While it sucks that they didn’t do it, its understandable given the kind of money something like that would have commanded. At least they even considered it.
