Cardi B pleads guilty to Queens strip club fight, avoiding jail time

NEW YORK (WABC) – Cardi B will avoid prison after pleading guilty to two misdemeanors for her played a part in a 2018 brawl in the Flushing strip club, Queens.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, whose real name is Belcalis Almánzar, pleaded guilty on Thursday to third-degree assault and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors.

The charges were elevated to felony when she was indicted in 2019, but on Wednesday she pleaded guilty to the original charges from the August 29, 2018 attack.

The 29-year-old musician agreed to serve the community for 15 days. If she fails to fulfill her community duty, she will be jailed for 15 days.

The attack at the Angels Strip club in Flushing stemmed from a long-smoldering feud between Cardi B and two sisters who worked as bartenders at the club.

Cardi B is said to have accused one of the women of having an affair with her husband, Offset, a member of the rap group Migos.

A fight broke out and Cardi B and the others with her threw bottles, chairs, and hookah pipes during the clash.

As part of the plea agreement, she admitted in court that she staged with her accomplices to attack the sisters. She also admitted to exchanging direct messages on Instagram.

The rapper appeared in court along with two co-defendants, Tawana Jackson-Morel and Jeffrey Bush, who also pleaded guilty in court on Thursday.

Bush, 35, accused of the actual assault, will serve six months behind bars.

All three agreed to stay away from the two female victims.

Cardi B made the following statement:

“Part of growing up and becoming an adult is taking responsibility for your own actions. As a mother, I’m trying to instill a habit in my children, but the example starts with myself. I was I’ve made some bad decisions in the past that I’m not afraid to face and master. These moments don’t define me and they don’t reflect who I am now. I look forward to getting through this situation with peace of mind. my family and friends and go back to what I love most – my music and my fans.”

Attorney Drew Findling said outside court that Cardi agreed to the plea at the last minute because she had “stepped into another part of her life” and that “the three-week jury trial will distract her from the things she feels are most important.”

For her, 15 days of community service is no different than the community service she has served over the past few years, he said, highlighting earlier examples.

“As soon as she does this community service, it will obviously match the community service she does, that will be the end,” he said.

Another attorney, Jeff Kern, said community service would be in Queens, and hinted it would involve children.

“The idea is that she’s going to do something that suits her strengths, in terms of reaching people, especially young people,” Kern said. “Positive message about education, about going in the right direction.”

Prior to Thursday morning’s plea, jury selection had been set to begin on Friday and Cardi’s trial was set to begin Monday.

“No one is above the law,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “In pleading guilty today, Ms. Belcalis Almanzar and two accomplices accepted responsibility for their actions. The office was pleased with the resolution, which included appropriate community service.”
