Canelo can reclaim his No. 1 spot by stopping Golovkin from saying Eddie Hearn

Via Robert Segal: Eddie Hearn thinks Canelo Alvarez can go a long way to regaining the #1 pound-for-pound spot in the sport by stopping Gennadiy Golovkin this Saturday.

As Hearn says, Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) wants to end 40-year-old Golovkin’s career in their three-part battle this Saturday, September 17th on DAZN pay-per-view at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The way Golovkin is saying it, Canelo could end his career by beating him by a decision, as GGG looks like he’s finished and could retire if he loses.

If Golovkin wins, the chance for another big payday against Canelo in the fourth game will be too hard for him to resist. It will be Canelo’s second loss in a row, and he wants revenge to find a way to atone.

A win for Golovkin would make for an interesting story, as few boxing fans were able to get him to win over 32-year-old Canelo.

But when you look at Canelo’s fatigue and one-step tempo in his recent loss to Dmitry Bivol on May 7, you can’t rule out a win for Golovkin.

If Golovkin is a quick study, he should have no problem copying the fighting style Bivol showed and recreating that Saturday against Canelo.

The problem with Golovkin is his inability to adapt in the two games against Canelo. Golovkin fought the same way in both battles, and did not learn from the first fight what worked and what didn’t work against Canelo.

Bivol is smart and figured out from watching the two Canelo-Golovkin fight how to beat Canelo, and he used that approach to perfection last May to beat him by decision. 12 innings.

“You’re both hungry to win, and you forget about the competition for the undisputed super-middleweight championship,” said Eddie Hearn. Social boxing about this Saturday night’s three-part showdown between undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez and 168-lb Gennadiy Golovkin.

“Not much [different about this fight than the two previous Canelo vs. Golovkin fights]. The boxers are the same, have granite chins, and both can punch. Both are extremely tough and both are wonderfully gifted.

“I think there will be a lot of fierceness in this fight. I think Gennadiy Golovkin feels in his head, ‘I’m rolling every dice there is to roll. I am doing my best in this war to try and win this war. ‘

“Canelo Alvarez, at some point, wanted to stop Gennadiy Golovkin. He wanted to end his career, in his words. So neither of the guys will take a step back.

“I think you will see a very aggressive fight, I think you will see a very brutal fight, and I think you will see the trading men in the fight. I think at 168; it will really suit Gennadiy Golvokin.

“He made 160 in 15 or 16 years. I think he will be extremely durable with the weight. He has a granite chin anyway, but I think both of them will take a lot of punishment in this matchup.

“I don’t think so because he’s a very consistent character,” Hearn said when asked if Canelo’s recent loss to Dmitry Bivol was on his mind. “You can always use 175 as an excuse, but he lost. When he came back from losing to Mayweather.

“His group said that he [Canelo] came back with a different though in [Alfredo] Angulo fights. He has that cynicism. I said to him, “You look ready” and he said, “More than ready.” His neck is like that.

“I have seen how he is trained in this camp. He gave it everything. He wants to go back and give it back. He is a very proud man. The defeat against Bivol made people question that he was the great that we made him, that we had put him on a pedestal.

“He wanted to be #1. Pound-for-pound King was his nickname, and indeed, he lost that when he lost to Bivol. He wants to come back and show the world that he is pound-for-pound.

By stopping Gennadiy Golovkin, it will be a long way to regain that position. I also love Gennadiy Golovkin, so I don’t want to make predictions.

“I don’t think it’s going to be 12 rounds because the fight, in my opinion, is going to be too much intensity and too much brutality to see these guys soak in 12 innings this time. I thought it was going to be a horror movie,” Hearn said.
