Canada-Mexico bonds need strengthening: experts

Experts say a stronger relationship between Canada and Mexico will be central to boosting North America’s competitiveness in the international arena.

Senator Peter Boehm, a former Liberal deputy cabinet minister, likens the continent’s tripartite relationship to an isosceles triangle, with the Canada-Mexico relationship being the shortest side.

Boehm said the two could work more closely on some issues, especially the threat to the democracy of Latin American countries like Venezuela.

He was speaking during a panel discussion of the Council of Americas Review of the North American Leaders Summit last week in Mexico City.

Boehm and others, including former Canadian diplomat Louise Blais, say closer links between Canada and Mexico will be key to defending North America from rising international pressure.

Panelists also said much in the tripartite relationship will depend on how the United States reacts to the new auto parts trade panel’s ruling siding with Canada and Mexico.
