Can preeclampsia during pregnancy be caused by the father?

The cause of preeclampsia is unclear, making strategies to prevent it difficult, although various maternal risk factors have been recognized.

In this new study, researchers examined questionnaire data from 586 men whose fathers were preeclampsia and 660 control men whose fathers were pregnant without preeclampsia.

Fathers in the former group commonly reported pre-existing TSG in a previous paternal pregnancy, but there were no differences in socioeconomic background or health history of the father or their parent with pre-pregnancy. jerk and control.

Comparable groups of fathers were often born from preeclampsia and normal pregnancies, which is in contrast to some previous studies.

Men who are born during a pregnancy with preeclampsia have been shown to be at increased risk of preeclampsia in later pregnancies in which they father.

These findings suggest a role for paternal genes in the increased risk of preeclampsia through the fetal genome. Unfortunately, in this study, a large number of fathers did not know if their mother had PE.

It would be interesting to replicate our analyzes using registry-based data, consistent with several previous studies. A larger study population will allow us to compare PE rates in previous paternal pregnancies with a partner other than the indicated mother. Both paternal genotype and phenotype need to be addressed in future studies.
