New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved after posting the fact of naming greenfield international airport at Mopa, Goa, as Manohar – Mopa International Airport, as a tribute to the late Manohar Parrikar, former defense minister and four-time chief minister of the coastal state.
“In response to the cherished aspirations of the people of Goa, the Minister of Goa conveyed the unanimous decision of the State Government Cabinet to name greenfield, Mopa, Goa International Airport as Manohar – Mopa International Airport, Goa,” an official statement said.
The airport at Mopa was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December.
Developed at a cost of approx $2,870 crore, the airport has been built around the theme of sustainable infrastructure and includes a solar power plant, green buildings, LED runway lights, rainwater collection, wastewater treatment plant modern with recycling facilities, among other such facilities.
It has adopted some of the best technologies in its segment such as 3D monolithic prefabricated buildings, StabilRoad, Robomatic Hollow prefabricated walls and 5G compatible IT infrastructure.
Some of the airport’s features include the world’s largest capacity runway, 14 parking lots with night parking for aircraft, automated baggage storage facility, navigation infrastructure independent and modern aviation, among other things.
Initially, the airport’s phase I will serve about 4.4 million passengers/year, which can be expanded to a saturated capacity of 33 million passengers. The airport will promote the socio-economic development of the state and serve the needs of the tourism industry. This place has the potential to become a key logistics center, directly connecting many domestic and international destinations.
