BMW pays homage to the M1 with a 644-horsepower XM PHEV SUV, priced at $159,995

One of the automotive industry worst kept secret was finally revealed. To celebrate Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the M performance division, BMW M created the first and only standalone M model since the M1. Oddly enough, it’s a high-performance plug-in hybrid SUV.

Next Tuesday lots of leaks, the 2023 BMW XM has officially become a model with 644 horsepower, 30 km electric driving range, new V-8 engine and the automaker’s latest design language. The flagship will cost $159,995 when it launches in the fourth quarter of 2023. Given its performance and pricing, the XM is aimed squarely at the high-performance hybrid versions of the Porsche Cayenne.

New plug-in hybrid powertrain

The XM is equipped with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that produces a combined output of 644 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. A new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 makes 483 hp, while an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic adds 194 hp. The XM will sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, according to BMW. The optional M Driver Pack increases top speed to 168 mph, and in pure electric mode the XM can hit speeds up to 87 mph.

All-wheel drive is standard, but it favors rear-end power via a multi-disc clutch distribution system. The system has 4WD, 4WD Sport and 4WD Sand modes, with 4WD being the default. 4WD Sport mode sends more force to the rear wheels to improve rear wheel deflection. 4WD Sand mode, which can only be enabled with stability control off, uses the traction optimization program to lock the differential in low-traction situations. The electronically locked rear differential can shift power from side to side to help push the XM around a corner and help limit side-travers.

The electrified powertrain was created for use in real-world motorsport because of the same concept used by The automaker’s M Hybrid LMDh race car. The XM will have a 30-mile electric range based on preliminary testing using the EPA test cycle. Official EPA ratings have yet to be submitted. The 25.7 kwh (usable energy) battery pack can be recharged from 0% to 100% in 3.3 hours on a 240 volt outlet via the 7.4 kw integrated charging system.

The driver will choose from Hybrid, Electric and eControl driving modes. Hybrid mode, which is the default, delivers full system power and combines electric and gas engines as needed. The electric mode will keep the powertrain running on electricity until it runs out of juice, but the gas-powered engine kicks in when the transmission is switched to manual mode or the driver presses the accelerator pedal. eControl mode locks the battery and maintains charge so it can be used for all-electric driving in urban areas or later when required.

BMW XM: Red label, but no air suspension

BMW says an XM Red Label model will be the first in a series of limited edition Red Label models for XM. Power output increases to 735 hp and 735 lb-ft of torque. Each XM Red Label model will have paint, wheels, upholstery and trim specific to each model. The first one will cost $185,995 when production begins in the summer of 2023.

The XM will use steel springs and adaptive dampers instead of an air suspension. Aluminum components for the double wishbone front axle and 5-link rear axle will help save weight. BMW notes that the XM has a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution and front and rear wheel height to aid handling. However, that can be offset by a hefty 6,062 lb curb weight.

An electromechanical anti-roll bar system is standard. Powered by a 48-volt electric motor and supercapacitor, the system can decouple the permanent connection between the wheels of each axle when driving in a straight line. Around corners, the active system can combine to suppress the body and counteract forces from the road.

The XM marks the first time an M-badged model has had rear-wheel drive. The rear wheel rotates in the same or opposite direction as the front wheel depending on the road speed. BMW did not detail the speed or extent to which the wheels could turn.

The XM reinforces BMW’s design direction with a split front light design that first debuted on 2023 7-Series and recently refresh 2023 X7. Looking almost identical to the XM Concept, the XM features a large kidney-shaped grille illuminated by LEDs. Active safety sensors are integrated into the lower front bumper.

Large 23-inch wheels fill the well and the rear has a quad exhaust. A recess in the top center of the rear door and the BMW logo is engraved on the top of the rear glass in homage the M1.

The cabin of the XM will be very familiar to anyone who has used a BMW recently. The spartan dashboard features a curved screen wall and the latest iDrive infotainment system controls on the center console. The two-row XM seats five people with ample room for rear-seat passengers, according to BMW. Classic Merino leather trim can be ordered.

XM will be building car manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
