BALTIMORE – Facts Toronto Blue Jays recalled catcher Gabriel Moreno and right-hand man Zach Pop from triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday and put quarterback Teoscar Hernandez on the paternity list.
The team also picked Mitch White for the Bisons after the right-hander lasted only two-thirds in a 9-6 loss in Baltimore on Tuesday.
White is 0-4 with an average of 8.17 earned in six starts with Toronto after he was bought in an August 2 deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hernandez, who is hitting .263 with 20 hosts and 64 RBIs, was replaced by Matt Chapman at number 5 in the batting order for the finale of the four-game series against the Orioles on Wednesday night.
Moreno, one of the Blue Jays’ top prospects, made his major league debut last June. He spent about a month with the team, mostly in a backup role behind all-star Alejandro Kirk, while Danny Jansen was sidelined with a finger injury.
Moreno has put up an average of 0.315 with three hosts and 39 RBIs in 62 games against Buffalo this season.
Pop, meanwhile, is 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA across 26 relief appearances with Toronto and Miami this year. He was acquired in an August 2 transaction with the Marlins.
Earlier in the day, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced their backup catcher Zack Collins was exempt. The 27-year-old was assigned to duty by the Blue Jays on Monday.
Collins was acquired by Toronto in a transaction with the White Sox that sent catcher Reese McGuire to Chicago on April 3.
