TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays selected the Julian Merryweather knockdown for Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon and recalled left-hander Foster Griffin from the Bisons.
Merryweather was demoted a day after he dropped five runs earning more than two-thirds of the round in an 18-11 win over Philadelphia, bringing his earned average to 6.75.
The 30-year-old right hand spent 12 weeks on the injury list with a left abdominal strain before being activated on September 5.
Merryweather has been 0-3 down in 26 appearances against Toronto this season. Opponents hit an average of 0.292 against him.
Griffin, 27, was acquired in a deal with the Kansas City Royals last July. He won 6-0 with a 2.01 ERA in 37 Triple-A appearances with Buffalo and Omaha this year.
The Blue Jays are scheduled to wrap up a two-game miniseries against the Phillies on Wednesday night.
Toronto (84-64) is in second place on the American League East leaderboard and holds the first of three AL wild card slots.
Going into Wednesday’s games, the Blue Jays led the Tampa Bay Rays by two games and the Seattle Mariners 2 1/2.
The New York Yankees were five and a half games ahead of second-placed Toronto in the qualifying race.
