Bihar: At least 12 killed as truck ploughs in a religious procession in Vaishali

RJD MLA Mukesh Roushan, whose Mahua constituency where the incident happened, ran to the area and said “at least nine people died on the spot. Many more people were taken to Sadar hospital in Hajipur (headquarters of the district), and three died from injuries along the way. Those in critical condition are being transported to hospitals in Patna.”

Vaishali Police Superintendent Manish Kumar said “the procession is carried out as part of a marriage-related custom. A wedding was planned in a few days at the home of a resident in the nearby village of Sultanpur. The driver of truck speeding through the adjacent Mahnar-Hajipur highway lost control. He was trapped inside the wrecked car and we feared he might be dead.”

According to locals, at least four children were among the dead.

Chaos reigned as bereaved people cried by the roadside and many others shouted angry slogans, claiming that the police were too slow to arrive.

“We have summoned personnel from several adjoining police stations to speed up the rescue work and keep the situation under control of law and order,” SP said.

Meanwhile, Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the accident and ordered the district government to ensure that the injured receive proper care, as well as that old gifts are quickly distributed to loved ones. of each deceased in accordance with the law.
